The ONS stats show, that although internet usage is catching up with the USA, there is still a significant pool of people who are not accessing the internet at all, or not in any significant way.

This should be a concern for Government policy, and the marketing profession also needs to be careful not to forget these groups.

Two London FE Colleges this year stopped printing prospectuses and only made their course information available online (and yet core to their mission is to teach elementary ICT skills). Both, as I understand it, have struggled with recruitment as a result. (I have to declare an interest, I worked at one and opposed the move!).

Councils and the Government are now making more and more services available online (which is to be welcomed) but it would be dangerous to ignore these statistics which prove that a lot of people still need other methods of access.

The commercial sector will be les interested in these groups, they are not likely to be high spenders, but if parts of society become isolated they eventually become a problem for us all with higher unemployment, higher crime etc.

We need to be creative in our thinking to ensure the wide gap that currently exists is closed.
